Citrix ICAClient didn't integrate with Firefox on Ubuntu Natty A2...

Citrix ICAClient didn't integrate with Firefox on my install of Ubuntu Natty Alpha 2. Not sure why, but resolved it by pointing it to the correct binary:
/usr/lib/ICAClient/wfica

UbuntuStudio Natty Alpha 2 Good Radeon Performance and a Dying laptop

So I downloaded and install UbuStu Natty Alpha 2 to check it out. Mostly I wanted to see how video performance was with the newer 2.6.38 kernel and radeon drivers. Well the performance is much better than even with 2.6.26 which I run on my AVLinux install. I can even play Minecraft with it. :)

The sad news is that my laptop is finally starting to die. :( I get graphics freeze ups occacionally, usually after running something 3d for a while like Minecraft or Left 4 Dead. I finally get decent video performance on this laptop on Linux and it is burning out. Foobar.

Installing Canon PIXMA MP210 on ArchLinux

So it took a little bit trial and error, but I finally got my printer working tonight.  Here's the just of what it took.

1. Follow steps here to get CUPS up and running.  Make sure to blacklist 'usblp'.
2. Install the cnijfilter-mp210 package from AUR http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=16696
3. Add 'acl' option to your root file system mount. https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=32959
4. I could see my printer was recognized now when plugged in from the output of 'dmesg |tail'.  But whenever I tried to print a test page I got an error in my cups log(http://localhost:631/admin/log/error_log) complaining like: '
   

   Unable to open listen socket for address ::1:631 - Address family not supported by protocol.'

5. I deleted the printer and reinstalled it. Pointed it to my ppd file in /usr/share/cups/model. And it works! I notice the device path in the printer config changed, maybe a bad one got autoconfiged before I did the blacklist. :/

Citrix ICA client on Linux, solving the missing Thawte Cert

When you install the Citrix presentation server client on Linux(ICAClient), it is missing an important file. To get the missing file do the following:
-open a terminal
brian@64studio:~$ cd /usr/lib/ICAClient/keystore/cacerts/
brian@64studio:/usr/lib/ICAClient/keystore/cacerts$ sudo wget www2.slac.stanford.edu/computing/windows/services/citrix/downloads/ThawteRoot.crt

Now, you can open Citrix app with harmony. :)

wicd, medibuntu, and ardour from source

Network manager has never worked well for me.  I have a Intel 3945ABG wireless card.  I always install Wicd because I like it. :)

 deb http://apt.wicd.net hardy extras

 sudo apt-get install wicd

This will automaticaly uninstall network-manager and add wicd to be started on login. 


I end up needing proprietary codecs and such, so next is to add the medibunu repository.

Get a newer lv2core package from here: http://lv2plug.in/spec/ 

Follow the install instructions.

Get the slv2 package from here: http://drobilla.net/software/slv2/ 

Get dependencies:

 Get the latests srouce from Ardour.org or the repo:

64 Studio 3.0 beta 3 Install and Setup

So I got a nice big hard drive for my laptop this week and am reinstalling XP and 64 Studio 3.0 beta 3 from scratch. I installed XP first and then 64 studio so GRUB would be my boot loader.
I booted from the install disc and installed normally with a partition for /, a partition for /home and 2 gig swap space. First thing I did when I got booted up was a 'sudo apt-get update' and I encountered a "partial upgrade" error. I remembered this was solved in the forum from the last time I installed. Steps to fix this beta 2/3 bug are at the post below.
