Here I Sit

This is from a while back, waiting our the wife's labor at the hospital. My poor attempt at poetry :/

Here I sit.
At a table in the cafeteria.
A mix of scrubs and street cloths.
Stories of worry and excitement.
Reminds me of old airport terminals.
A place that combines sad with the anxious.
Here I sit.
This is why I am here.
A long time before my wife will bear.
A life so precious and without a care.
This will be the father she meets.

Installing Canon PIXMA MP210 on ArchLinux

So it took a little bit trial and error, but I finally got my printer working tonight.  Here's the just of what it took.

  1. Follow steps here to get CUPS up and running.  Make sure to blacklist 'usblp'.
  2. Install the cnijfilter-mp210 package from AUR http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=16696
  3. Add 'acl' option to your root file system mount. https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=32959
  4. I could see my printer was recognized now when plugged in from the output of 'dmesg |tail'.  But whenever I tried to print a test page I got an error in my cups log(http://localhost:631/admin/log/error_log) complaining like: '
    Unable to open listen socket for address ::1:631 - Address family not supported by protocol.'
  5. I deleted the printer and reinstalled it. Pointed it to my ppd file in /usr/share/cups/model. And it works! I notice the device path in the printer config changed, maybe a bad one got autoconfiged before I did the blacklist. :/

Woot, let's burn some ink!

Really? I expected better from you.

From the Minnesota Independent:
Human Rights Campaign calls out Target, Best Buy over gift to MN Forward, Emmer’s ties to anti-gay ministry

I urge everyone to sign the petition so Target and Best Buy can try and reclaim some reputation. Then I can buy large packs of toilet paper and diapers without shame again.

Seeing this made the bad news a little bit better. :)

Chosen Robot and Mixbus

Just trying to finish up the mixing of Chosen Robot's new album using Harrison's Mixbus based on Ardour. Sounding pretty damn good. The built in channel strip eq, compression and the busses with tape saturation is really convenient. Plus they sound great. Almost time to get this shit mastered. :)

World Peoples’ Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth

The World Peoples’ Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth has begun in Bolivia this week. I can't find major US news coverage about it. Seems like they are avoiding it. I would think an event that 15,000 people from about 130 countries are expected to attend is considered world news.

Props to Democracy Now and the Huffington post for actually covering this.

Installing M-Audio Ozone on 64 Studio / Ubuntu Hardy

I had to install the drivers for my M-Audio Ozone again today and thought I would put the steps in a nice little package here.

$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install madfuload
$ sudo nano /etc/udev/rules.d/42-madfuload.rules

Comment or delete it all out and put in this line:
ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="usb", SYSFS{idVendor}=="0763", SYSFS{idProduct}=="2808", RUN+="/usr/local/sbin/madfuload -l -3 -f /usr/local/share/usb/maudio/ma008100.bin -D $env{DEVNAME}"

$ sudo /etc/init.d/udev restart

Plug in and power on the Ozone.

$ dmesg |tail
should see a line like "usbcore: registered new interface driver snd-usb-audio"
$ aplay -l
You should see the Ozone listed as a sound device.

Happy jammin. :)

Oil change and some breakfast hash

So I needed to get an oil change and since my warrenty was up at Freeway Ford, where we bought our 2007 Focus, I decided to find a place in the neighborhood. I dropped my address, search for nearby auto places and Action Auto came up. It had some good reviews and sounded like a family run shop so I decided to try it out.
The service was great and the price was good. I got to meet one of the two brothers that run it and told me that their dad has owned the place for thirty some years. While I waited for the work to be done I walked across the street to try out the Citizen Cafe for some breakfast.
I got the roasted vegetable hash with a fried egg. It was a delicous blend of potatoes, carrots and parsnips(which were mighty sweet) and a perfectly over easy runny yoked egg on top. To top it all off they served me some house made hot sauce. I have to get back their with my wife to try some dinner or even break fast again. Yum Yum. :)
